Social Justice 12

 

Course Outline:

Social Justice 12 is a project based course designed for students interested in local, national, and global issues and how to make a difference in the world. Many course topics will be chosen jointly by the teacher and students. Students will analyze social injustice based on several characteristics, and examine the role of government and individuals in promoting social justice. Students will engage in a research project based on a topic of choice, and design a project to bring awareness to their chosen issue.

Unit 4: Animal Rights

Unit 5: Racism

Unit 6: Ableism

Unit 7: Poverty

Unit 8 - Leaders

Learning Guides - 30%

Projects - 70%

Student Responsibilities:

  • To complete all assignments to the best of their ability (partially completed assignments will not be accepted)

  • To complete assignments in the order in which they are assigned, unless given written instruction otherwise

  • To review the feedback given on assessed assignments and complete corrections as required

  • To maintain regular contact with teachers

  • To work within mutually agreed upon time frames

  • To ask for help and clarification when needed

Keys to Success: 

  1. Set a schedule so that you are working on the course either everyday or every second day. There should be no big gaps, with the hope of catching up. This is VERY important!
  2. Actively work through each lesson, trying examples and reflecting on material.
  3. Use the Unit Assignments as your tool for documenting your understanding. Lay it out neatly and well organized.
  4. Make sure you understand any test question you get wrong. If you can’t figure it out – ASK for help!
  5. Be sure to use your Moodle message system for regular communication with your instructor.
