Chemistry 11

 

Course Outline:

It is recommended that students complete Science 10 or equivalent with a good foundation in mathematics, prior to enrolling in this course.

Chemistry 11 was developed to promote the acquisition of knowledge and the learning of problem solving skills as related to core chemistry concepts. The course emphasizes the application of chemistry in everyday life, including skills required in the workplace, while promoting positive attitudes towards science and scientific literacy. Chemistry 11 provides a solid foundation for students planning to take Chemistry 12. The course is self paced, with lessons delivered via unit booklets. Student learning is demonstrated through Unit Learning Guides, Projects, Practice Tests, Unit Tests, a Midterm Exam and Final Exam, graded by the course teacher. Test and Exam writing are supervised by an online support teacher. Face to face support is available during an online support block or at a connect session. Students have one year to complete the course.

Learning Guides - 10%

Learning Guides:

The Learning Guide must be submitted prior to writing the Unit Test. All submissions MUST be very neat and well organized.

It is assumed that you will do all the required assignments. Success on the exams depends upon exposure to a large variety of questions and lots of practice.

 

Projects:

Projects allow students to make choices on how they wish to enhance their understanding of unit concepts. Students should be looking for projects that they think will enhance their understanding in areas of interest and/or weakness, as they work through units.

 

Exam Supervision: 

Supervision is not required for practice tests. Students may complete practice tests on their own and use them as practice to prepare for the unit test. Students should keep track of where they need help and review lesson material prior to re-attempting a practice test.

All tests and exams are “closed book” and require supervision. Please arrange with a teacher from the Sea to Sky Online School to write your tests as needed.

Students should print the course Formula Sheet and Periodic Table to use on all testing.

 

Resources: 

There is NO textbook required for this course. An optional extra resource for the course is the textbook Hebden: Chemistry 11 A Workbook for Students (ISBN 0-9682069-1-3). Students will need a computer with internet access and headphones/speakers. Other material required for the course include: a scientific calculator, a ruler, practice paper (lined and blank) and graph paper (1cm by 1cm grid is preferred).  

 

Keys to Success: 

1. Set a schedule so that you are working on the course either everyday or every second day. There should be no big gaps, with the hope of catching up. This is VERY important! 
2. Actively work through each lesson, trying examples and reflecting on material. 
3. Use the Learning Guides as your tool for documenting your understanding. Lay it out neatly and well organized. 
4. Make sure you understand any test question you get wrong. If you can’t figure it out – ASK for help! 
5. Be sure to use your Moodle message system for regular communication with your instructor.
