English 11: Literary Studies

 

The aim of English 11: Literary Studies  is to provide students with opportunities for personal and intellectual growth through speaking, listening, reading, viewing, writing, and representing to make meaning of the world and to prepare them to participate effectively in all aspects of society.

 

The goal of Literary Studies 11 is to enable students in:

  •       Responding to texts personally, critically, and creatively.
  •       Demonstrating understanding of diversity.
  •       Conveying and deriving meaning through oral language features.
  •       Identifying the influence of historical and social factors in texts and on texts.
  •       Analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating literary, informational, and visual texts.
  •       Explaining and supporting personal connections to texts.
  •       Appreciating the writer’s craft by analyzing text structures and features.
  •       Creating a variety of personal, informational, and imaginative texts.
  •       Creating thoughtful personal responses, evaluating ideas, and synthesizing and extending thinking.
  •       Using elements of style and form appropriate to purpose and audience.
  •       Using conventions of language that enhance meaning and artistry.
  •       Prepare students for the English 12 curriculum.

Unit 1: Communication Perspectives

Unit 2: Putting it all together: Independent Novel Study

Unit 3: Personal and Cultural Identity: Impressions

Unit 4: Personal and Social Responsibility: Connections to Nature

Unit 5: Choice Units: Creative/Critical Thinking

 

Course Grading:

Substantive Work – 5%

Unit Assignments – 75%

Big Ideas - 10%

Final Exam – 10%

 

Resources:

Students will read course information on and through the Moodle course page. Students will need an independent novel. 

 

Student Responsibilities:

  • To complete all assignments to the best of their ability (partially completed assignments will not be accepted)
  • To complete assignments in the order in which they are assigned, unless given written instruction otherwise
  • To review the feedback given on assessed assignments and complete corrections as required
  • To maintain regular contact with teachers
  • To work within mutually agreed upon time frames
  • To ask for help and clarification when needed

 

English 11: Literary Studies meets the English Language Arts 11 requirement for graduation in British Columbia. There is not a provincial exam for this course.
